E-Bike & Scooter Safety Law Update

Westport, CT's e-bike safety page outlines new rules effective October 1, 2025, reclassifying high-powered e-bikes (750-3,500 watts without pedals) as motor-driven cycles requiring a driver's license, and those over 3,500 watts as motorcycles needing license, registration, and insurance. Standard e-bikes under 750 watts (Class 1-3) don't require a license but must follow all traffic laws, ride with traffic, obey signals, and stay right. All e-bike riders now must wear helmets regardless of age, and e-bikes are prohibited on sidewalks and from carrying passengers unless designed for multiple riders. The law also prohibits modifying speed capabilities (fines $100-$300) and warns against reckless riding, with special caution to parents about e-bikes capable of reaching 28 mph.
